Two basic kinds of Galaxy Watch 3 45mm and 41mm
There are two basic kinds of Samsung Galaxy Watch 3s: A larger one, with a 1.4-inch (45mm) display and a smaller model with a 1.2″ (41mm) diameter display.
The important difference is what’s inside. The larger model boasts a 340mAh battery, while the smaller one has only a 247mAh. In practical terms, you can expect to get two days of working life from the more powerful battery and about a day and a half from it’s smaller brother.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 display is first-rate. It’s 1.4-inch 360 x 360 AMOLED screen is bright enough to read in full daylight. It’s also colorful and easy to use.
With its Corning Gorilla Glass face and ISO standard 22810:2010 water resistance, it’s also sturdy enough to be recognized as a MIL-STD-810G compliant device. In short, it can take a beating and keep on ticking.
Besides using its touch screen to navigate, it also comes with a handy, movable bezel. I find it with its firm feel to be a real pleasure to use.
All of this is powered by a 1.15GHz Exynos 9110 Dual-core ARM processor. This runs the Tizen Based Wearable OS 5.5. Tizen is a Linux-based mobile operating system.
While it doesn’t have as many apps as the Apple Watch family, it does have a fair number of useful and entertaining programs. For example, it comes with a built-in Spotify music app.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 charging
To charge the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 you’ll need its included wireless charger. While this is a Qi-compatible, I’m told by other Galaxy owners that not all Qi chargers will work with their watch.
Lots of reviews harp on the disappointing battery life, but I don’t get why they’re disappointed. The new Galaxy Watch’s direct rival, the Apple Watch Series 5, only has 18-hour battery life. Most smartwatches are hard-pressed to match the Galaxy’s 48 hours of useful life.
True, if all you want from a smartwatch is fitness tracking and long battery life, then check out a Fitbit watch, like the Fitbit Versa 2, which can work up to four days. I wanted a different kind of smartwatch and that’s what I got from the Galaxy Watch 3.
Of course, you can get better battery life by turning off its built-in GPS and with other battery-saving measures. I was happy with the battery life I got just by running it on its default settings.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Contactless
The only contactless payment system it supports out of the box, however, is Samsung Pay with NFC. It, however, doesn’t support the older, but still common, Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) standard. It also won’t let you use Apple or Google Pay. For those, you’ll need to use your phone.
For networking, the Watch supports 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0. It primarily uses Bluetooth to connect with your smartphone. You can also get a Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 with 4G LTE for about $50 more.
One interesting, and surprisingly useful, the feature is the watch also comes with a microphone. That means, as I found to my surprise, you can use it to make or answer phone calls. Shades of Dick Tracy’s wrist-watch radio!

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Fitness and health features:
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 can track 40 total activities, and seven can be tracked automatically, meaning you won’t always have to select what kind of exercise you’re doing beforehand. I needed this when my sprightly 85-pound black lab didn’t want to stop for me to launch a walk tracking on our routine treks around our town.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 GPS
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 on-board GPS measured my daily course accurately enough (it’s roughly 1.2 miles, depending on how many times the dog wants to go in circles). I had the same experience when I took the Samsung Galaxy Smart Watch 3 biking and running, the latter of which was informed by on-demand VO2 Max readings. I’m far from an endurance runner so I didn’t trigger any warnings, but I imagine more dedicated athletes would appreciate this feature during training.
But they might not appreciate the leather straps. I certainly know I didn’t. It felt odd getting them wet with sweat, and I didn’t even consider taking the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 near a pool despite its 5ATM rating for water resistance. I’d recommend getting silicone bands if you plan to use the Galaxy Watch 3 for anything more than light exercise, or taking a look at one of the best fitness trackers instead.
Smart Watch 3: Battery life
Samsung made big claims about the original Galaxy Watch being able to last for a few days short of a week. That claim was based on light usage.
Based in our testing with the 45mm model, we say you’re probably going to get two days out of it, but if you use power hugging features, it will be closer to a 1.5 days.
It’s clear that if you’re using features like GPS, continuous heart rate monitoring, cranking the screen brightness up and animated watch faces, the drain is noticeable.
An hour’s running using GPS knocked around 15-20% off the battery. Charging time feels a little on the laboured side too, usually taking a couple of hours to get from 0-100%. How it could do with some fast charging on board here.
For anyone that used it for more than light usage it tended to last a couple of days. So, while it might have the slight edge over an Apple Watch, it still can’t match what you can get from a Fitbit or Garmin smartwatch.
With the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 , it looks like more of the same with no mention of claimed battery life from Samsung this time. We do know that the capacity of the batteries mirror what you’ll find on the small and large Galaxy Watch Active 2 models.
That’s a 340mAh battery on the 45mm Watch 3 and a smaller 247mAh one on the 41mm model. You also have the a Watch mode to push things further but also restrict what you can actually use.
It’s disappointing that Samsung hasn’t managed to make improvements in this department, especially when the likes of Huawei, Fitbit and Amazfit are managing to optimise those power hungry features, so they don’t noticeable dent the time it lasts between charges.
Sleep tracking for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3
In bed, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 benefits from Samsung’s partnership with the National Sleep Institute to provide wearers with insight on their REM cycle, plus a morning report on quality of sleep and tips on how to improve sleep.
In the nights I wore it to bed, I simultaneously tested the Apple Watch sleep tracking. Apple’s native sleep tracking app credited me with a bit more sleep and knew when I woke up in the middle of the night during monstrous thunderstorms, whereas Samsung responded with more actionable data.
Some of these insights are provided by the Galaxy Watch 3’s SpO2 sensor, or pulse oximeter. An SpO2 sensor can inform breathing disturbances while sleeping, which is a prevalent symptom of sleep apnea. I, for one, don’t have much trouble sleeping, but someone who does could learn how to take action on changing their sleep cycle with the Watch 3.
Apps and Storage
Tizen OS for Samsung Galaxy Smart Watch 3 has a more limited library of third-party selections than the native Apple Watch App Store, but there are enough major programs like Uber and Spotify at your disposal.
And, with the Galaxy Watch 3’s 8GB of music storage, you can save tunes for offline play black with a Spotify Premium subscription. I’m not using an LTE model, so I look forward to having a few of my playlists available when I leave my phone at home for bike rides. I appreciate this feature about my Apple Watch 5, which has a larger 16GB storage capacity. I’ve already used up about half my Galaxy Watch 3’s storage with a few of my favorite playlists, though, so I’ll need to be mindful of offloading audio I don’t need anymore.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is entering an increasingly crowded wearable market. There are plenty of stylish smartwatches and excellent fitness trackers to choose from these days, and Samsung tried to strike a balance between the two. It brought the best health features of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 to a bezeled design that rivals offerings from timepiece savant Fossil.
But this convergence came at a cost — the Galaxy Watch 3 is more expensive than the Galaxy Watches and Wear OS Fossil options before it, and leans more towards lifestyle than fitness. I can’t say I’d replace my Apple Watch with an Android one at the same price. But if you’ve picked up an Android phone—in particular, one made by Samsung—and want an extension of it on your wrist wherever you go, you won’t find anything more polished and powerful than the Galaxy Watch 3. Or anything with as satisfying of a spinning mechanism, at least.

I chose to go with the 45mm version as I’m a fan of big watches and it actually looks nice despite what others say about it not being meant for smaller wrist sizes. This Samsung Galaxy Smart Watch 3 is very responsive and I’ve yet to have any sort of lag. I’ve set up my NFC payments through Samsung pay but I haven’t had to use it yet so I can’t comment on that as of right now. Many of the apps that I use are very clear and detailed such as messages, weather, Discord, etc…. I haven’t tried to dictate any of my messages so hopefully, I can provide more incite into this later on. We have used Bixby a few times and there has been no error in Bixby understanding what I say thus far. I have no complaints about this time piece so far besides possibly the price which is quite steep. There is no ECG which is a little disappointing but I expect it’ll come out in the near future. Otherwise, I’m quite happy with my purchase. If anyone is looking for an upgrade and don’t mind spending a little extra for a well built and high-quality, you won’t be disappointed.

My first smartwatch and I LOVE IT. I have Apple IPads and a MacBook Pro 16 Inch but have always preferred Android phones, Samsung in particular. We have had this Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 a short time (got it a few days after it’s release) and have no complaints at all. I can have a new Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 every day by simply changing the watch face (and I have quite a collection of them already). Bixby is understanding me better and better every day. (I was a bit frustrated at the beginning).
The leather band is good quality and even though it was kind of stiff when I first got it, it is softening up quite nicely and is now very comfortable. We just ordered a silicone band in case I want to change the look to something more casual.
I was a bit hesitant to spend this much money on a Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 but considering I have spent twice as much on a Samsung phone in the past, I decided to go for it. I am glad I did. If you are on the fence about buying this and it is within your budget, I say go for it. Despite the fact it is a bit pricey, I think it is worth the cost, particularly if you love new technology like I do.
