1. Create a design
However, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 shares the same basic shape as its predecessor, the Note 4, the construction of the two devices could not be more different.
The faux leather back, which was made of plastic but had the appearance of cheap snakeskin, is no longer available. It has been replaced by a glass sheet that has been infused into a metal frame, similar to the one found on the Samsung Galaxy S6.
The Note 5’s dimensions are 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6mm, which is slightly larger than Samsung’s 5.1-inch flagship, but it is actually a hair smaller and noticeably thinner than the Note 4. It’s also lighter, weighing in at 171g, a reduction of 5g despite its metal and glass construction.
Its back glass also curves inward on the right and left sides, adding to the overall effect. Despite its phablet size, the smaller footprint and curved back made it much easier to hold in my palm than other smartphones.
When compared to its faux leather predecessor, glass makes gripping this 5.7-inch phone more difficult. It is also breakable and has a fingerprint magnet, which makes it a less desirable option. Even though there is less traction, the iPhone 6S isn’t nearly as slippery as the super-smooth aluminum iPhone 6S with rounded edges.
In addition to improving grip, cases will also prevent my overarching palm from interfering with the touchscreen, which is made possible by the device‘s ultra-thin bezel. I did notice that the S Pen on the Note 5 is a little lighter than the S Pen on the Note 4, which resulted in slightly cleaner and easier writing when compared to the slightly heavier pen on the Note 4. My handwriting is still barely readable on both of these pieces.
The S Note application itself has been greatly simplified, with additional features hidden away in the More menu. A slew of additional tools, such as a chart helper and an extension pack, are available for download. The extension pack includes advanced features such as a more robust toolbar and shape recognition, handwriting “transformation,” and the ability to record sketches.
Everything about the app, from the way you select colors to the way you save favorite combinations of pen tips and ink thickness, can be customized within the app itself. Like previous versions, the pen remains sensitive along the corners of the page, and onscreen controls will temporarily disappear so that you can continue to write and draw “below” them while the pen remains sensitive.
3. Put on a show
In some cases, smartphone screens are a little bit larger than this, but not by much. The Galaxy Note 5 has a massive 5.7-inch display that provides plenty of screen real estate for working. The use of a large display for everyday tasks, such as managing your email inbox, is more comfortable than using a smaller display.
Screen-intensive tasks, such as viewing large documents and spreadsheets, are even more comfortable. The trade-off, of course, is that the 5.7-inch display can feel a little unwieldy at times due to its large size. When I held the Note 5 in one hand, it was a real challenge to get my thumb to the top of the display, even with my other hand free.
However, the utility of the large screen outweighs the relatively minor usability issues that may arise for users with smaller hands. Although the iPhone 6s Plus has a smaller display (5.5 inches), it also has a larger bezel around the screen, which makes one-handed use of the device difficult. Similarly, the Google Nexus 6P is larger than the Note 5, with a 5.7-inch display, making it a more attractive option.
However, Samsung has included an extremely useful feature that makes using the Note 5 with one hand much easier. When you triple-press the home button, the active portion of the display shrinks down, allowing you to easily reach the top of the screen with your thumb, which is convenient. With a single tap, you can easily restore the screen’s original dimensions to the device.
Aside from its size, the Note 5’s screen is absolutely stunning. Because the super-high-resolution panel has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, the text appears to be exceptionally crisp. Additionally, the colors are richer and more vibrant than those found on competing phones.
3. Support for Styluses
The S Pen stylus, which transforms your phone into a digital notepad, is the Note 5’s most distinguishing feature. While a simple capacitive stylus that will work with any smartphone is available for purchase, the Note line is still unique in that it comes packaged with a digitizer stylus that has pressure sensitivity. Phones such as the iPhone 6s Plus and the Google Nexus 6P, for example, do not support active-stylus input.
Pressure sensitivity is critical for creating a natural writing experience on a digital screen, as it allows you to vary the weight of your line and feather your strokes just as you would with a traditional pen. Samsung claims that the S Pen‘s latest iteration can detect approximately twice as many levels of pressure as previous models, and I believe them; jotting down notes on the Note 5’s display was buttery smooth.
The stylus is now spring-loaded inside its slot on the phone’s bottom edge, allowing it to pop out easily when you press on it after it has been inserted. Pulling out the stylus, as is customary, launches the Air Command menu, which provides convenient shortcuts to a variety of useful note-taking apps and other useful features. In addition, by pressing on the button on the side of the pen, you can bring up the Air Command options.
There is no need to turn on your Note 5’s screen to begin writing; you can jot down a quick note on the phone’s blank, black screen (the text appears in white) and then seamlessly send it to your notes app with just a single tap.
You can still benefit from using a stylus even if you are not interested in writing anything down by hand. For example, I enjoyed using it during light document editing because it allowed me to select text with greater precision than I would have been able to achieve with my finger.
4. New features have been added.
When compared to the Galaxy Note 4, which was released in 2014, the new Note 5 has a few extra tricks up its sleeve.
Air Command, a floating icon that can be found anywhere on your screen, opens up to reveal a circular menu of the most frequently used apps — such as the S Note app, the browser, or your photo gallery — when you tap it. It’s always on by default, but you can turn it off in the Settings menu if you prefer. You can also personalize it by including up to three applications of your choosing.
Air Command responds much more quickly these days, which means that if you accidentally press the S Pen button, you can quickly press it again to dismiss it without causing too much disruption to your work. I like this feature because it enhances the S Pen’s ability to jot down notes in a very short period of time. If you want to enable it, you’ll have to go into the settings.
You can now annotate PDFs by handwriting all over them, just as you can do with a screenshot, which is a nice touch.

What’s the point of having a large display if you don’t have the tools to make the most of it? Multiwindow support is built into the Note 5, allowing you to run two apps at the same time in a split-screen mode — a feature that is conspicuously absent from many other phablets.
The process of launching two apps side by side is simple: tap and hold the multitasking button (located to the left of the home button) for a few seconds, then select two apps from the menu. Using this menu, you can resize the apps and rotate your phone so that they are displayed stacked in portrait mode or side by side when viewing them in landscape mode.
