My Thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR

This new Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR does it all!! I’m not a fitness fanatic, so I will not comment on the accuracy of the calorie count or heart rate monitor. I’m happy to know my daily steps taken, be reminded to move when I’ve been sitting too long at my computer, know my ticker is still tick’n, and receive kudos when I’ve reached my daily goal.

First of all, this is a stunning piece of technology, very sleek, and looks great on any wrist. I replaced the pale pink silicone band with a slim black leather one so it looks very sharp and professional. The Pink Gold color keeps the watch looking slim, not bulky (although the Aqua Black was intriguing), and blends well with most skin tones. I chose the 44mm for better battery life – yes, I get 3 days between charges. I also like the larger screen for easier interaction with the touch screen, which by the way is very clear, bright, and easy to see even in sunlight!

App Access Great Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR Aqua Black

LOVE LOVE LOVE, that I can receive and respond to texts and calls. I have found that the 30-foot maximum distance to my phone requirement is actually conservative, my phone has been further away from me than that, and I still receive texts and calls. I work in a showroom where I cannot have my phone with me; I can now react immediately when I’m contacted. For texting, I can use voice to text and even edit my response after I have spoken it using my voice again or handwriting on the screen.

There are endless emojis I can reply with and I can send and receive texted images. I can ANSWER THE WATCH if my phone rings. There is a mic and a speaker on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR, and the voice clarity is perfect. I can also reject a call right from my watch and send a text back instead, like letting the caller know that I’ll call them back in a bit.

The Galaxy Active 2 also gives you the detailed quality of sleep feedback. It does a great job breaking downtime spent in REM vs the other sleep phases. And with the ability to fully charge in about 2 hours, every 3 days, you can absolutely wear the watch to bed every night to benefit from that useful information.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR is completely customize-able. You can choose what notifications you want to receive on your watch and how (vibration, sound, or both). With the Do Not Disturb feature, you can also schedule hours at night that you won’t receive any notifications at all. You can arrange the widgets in any order, add and subtract Apps, and navigate by scrolling between them or use the digital haptic bezel. The digital bezel adds a bit of class to the watch and works flawlessly. It’s responsive and brings back that rotating functionality that the first Galaxy Active lacked. I have uninstalled the Apps I did not find useful to conserve battery life and added a couple, including Alexa.

YES, ALEXA!! I added the Alexa App, called “Talk to Alexa” In the companion “Galaxy Wearable” App. You can find it in the App section: Discover>Top Watch Apps>Categories>Lifestyle>Top Paid. I can ask Alexa to answer questions, things that I would typically Google on my phone, in addition to finding out the weather, set timers, and control my smart home, RIGHT FROM MY WRIST! I have tested various requests using my Active 2 vs asking Alexa in my home. The responses were identical. The first photo below is of Alexa ready to listen, and you can program her to launch when you double tap the Home button.

This is an amazing Smart Watch, get it, you won’t be sorry. Now complete with Alexa, this is a perfect alternative to an Apple Smart Watch if you are an Android/Samsung phone user… I have been using it since the day of its release and it is a fun watch to use and a wonderful companion. Customer Reviews:

Review #1 Finally, a full-fledged smartwatch worth buying.

Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019

Pattern Name: 44mmStyle: Bluetooth Color: Black Verified Purchase

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR, is one of the best purchases that I’ve ever made in wearable technology. It delivers with more than adequate battery life, far superior comfort when compared to other products, a feature set that will appease most so-called “Geeks” such as myself, and the availability to add more features and/or applications via the Galaxy app store.

The new customizable watch face feature makes the creation of customizable watch faces easy and simple. With just a snap of your clothing, and multiple watch faces are created for you that match your outfit. I also appreciate the much slimmer and sleeker design, when compared to the regular Galaxy Watch. With that, I can confidently say that (at least in my opinion) the Watch Active2 is the most fashionable, functional and flexible. (The Three Fs, as I call it.)

It is fashionable, due to its sleek glass, (in my case) aluminum housing, and unobtrusive thickness that is no thicker (if not, thinner) than your average premium analog watch.
It is functional, due to the fact that you have all the basic necessities that any digital watch should have PLUS, step tracking, workout tracking, heart rate monitoring, upcoming electrocardiogram capability, text messaging, the ability to accept, decline, and create phone calls, pay for things using Samsung pay, finds your phone, the creation and cancellation of alarms and reminders, the ability to check the weather, and have music playback controls (also including track selection), just to name a few. (And I don’t think I really need to explain why I think it’s so flexible).

And just to mention other things I love about the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR, I love the touch bezel (which is much better than you think it is), I love the SAMOLED display that by default automatically dims to fit the environment that it’s in along with providing smooth animations, I love the now larger back button so you can tell that it’s different if you’re in the dark, I love the ability to triple-click the apps/home button to send a message to your emergency contact(s), and so much more.

Now here’s the part where I would usually explain the cons of the watch/device. But there was an issue, I struggled to come up with any. I would usually have a very long laundry list of cons, but I really don’t have any. The only part I can say is a con, is that some people aren’t satisfied with the accuracy of the health tracking features. Maybe it’s just me, but I really haven’t had any. The lack of feminine health tracking might be a con to some women, but I’m not female, so… That doesn’t apply to me… That’s all I can really say.

So in the end, if you are currently looking for a smartwatch to go with your Android device, then I say you should absolutely go with this one. It has many a feature that the competition do not supply, has great battery life, a digital rotating bezel that is the best way to interact with it, a decent amount of customization, and health tracking that I believe to be accurate. (Disclaimer: I am not a health professional by any means, and therefore I am not the first person you should listen to when it comes to advise about health tracking). So, I say it is a very worthy purchase. And I am enjoying my time with it.

Review #2

I wear my Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR 24/7 and totally use it as a fashion device when attending formal gatherings. I’ll generally turn the watch face to always on and chose a neat face when I’m dressed up. The Galaxy Wear app will now allow you to take a picture of your attire, and provide you with a selection of faces that match your theme. This is REALLY cool and it works exactly as you would expect it to. The beautiful design of the watch only makes me want to show it off more. They’ve really improved the design from the earlier generations and it feels and looks less like a tech gadget, and more like a traditional watch.

Really my ONLY gripe for this (and all Samsung watches) is the lack of 3rd party support. It is much better now than when I first got my Gear, but the Galaxy App store really feels like it is about 15 years old. Since apps aren’t too big of a deal for me, I don’t mind much but it did take getting used to (and eventually just ignoring) the app store and its limited options. I did find Strava, MapMyRun, Smart things, Alexa, and other apps, but I haven’t really found a need for them.

Update:

After about 3 weeks with the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 SM-R820NZKAXAR, I regularly get 4 full days to a charge with standard use. If I use the GPS for more than a few hours over that time I might find myself needing to charge after 3 days just to be safe. After 90 minutes with the GPS on (not tethered to phone) this weekend, I had used 11% of my battery. Battery life is FANTASTIC. Easily double the best battery life I saw with my Gear S2.

Update #2:

Starting to regularly see battery life of 4+ days. The last two recharges went onto the charger with ~18% battery left after approximately 4d18h usage each. Given the fact that I use the watch for GPS-related items almost every day, I’m nervous to push it an extra day, but based on the way the battery life continues to increase slowly I’m sure I’ll be there soon. I cannot express enough how pleased I am with this watch.

Update #3:

Just about 7 months in daily use by a very active user. I probably use watch GPS for 10 hours a week on average, and the watch has spent probably a hundred hours in the pool. My battery is at 22% with 4 days and 10 hours on the battery. My opinion of the watch has only improved. Despite daily use in rough environments (cramped car engine bays, chlorinated pools, etc) the watch still looks brand new.

There isn’t a scratch on the face, and battery life is still as good or better than new. I was concerned the lack of bezel would allow the face to be scratched more, but this watch is TOUGH. I know I’ve impacted it on tools, concrete, and other….cringe inducing materials and it doesn’t show any wear. I’ve taken to swimming in our 12yd pool in the backyard since everything else is closed, and even with these super short laps, the lap counter function is still dead on. It helps keep me from going crazy counting out the 142 laps that equal a mile. I’m not sure what else I can share. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite gadgets.
