What can a smart TV do for you?

The ability to watch content that isn’t available on regular TV channels is the most valuable feature of a Smart TV.

A Smart TV gives you access to your favorite video-on-demand (VOD) services like Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube.

As well as music streaming services like Spotify and a variety of games and sports content to enjoy whenever you want.

1. Samsung TV Plus

Samsung’s TV Plus app, which offers free live-streamed TV without a subscription right out of the box, is at the top of our list of the best smart TV apps.

TV Plus, like bunny ears of old, brings free TV back to the masses, and while it lacks a few key local channels (for which you’ll need an indoor antenna).

It has a slew of specialty channels for gamers, chefs, music fans, and others who cater to specific niche audiences.

Furthermore, the fact that it comes pre-installed on every new Samsung TV practically eliminates any reason not to give it a shot.

2. Netflix

Netflix has been the gold standard in online video streaming services since it pioneered the concept nearly a decade ago.

Netflix is investing heavily in its own exclusive productions such as Stranger Things, Sex Education, Black Mirror, and Bojack Horseman.

In addition to having an impressive selection of existing TV shows and movies.

Although there are significant differences in the content available on the UK versus the US store – even if Disney Plus may have taken some of the best gems out of the library – Netflix is the largest streaming service around in terms of the sheer volume of content.

3. Disney Plus

Disney Plus is a streaming service that allows you to watch classic Disney animated films, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and even content from 20th Century Fox such as The Simpsons.

Although it is still in its early stages, Disney Plus will eventually feature original content from Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar, putting it in a strong position to compete with Netflix and Apple TV Plus.

The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda are only the beginning.

4. Apple TV Plus

The Morning Show, Jason Momoa’s epic See, Sesame Street spin-off Helpsters, teen fantasy Ghostwriters, Hailee Steinfeld’s Emily Dickinson biopic, and NASA drama For All Mankind are among the notable titles on Apple TV Plus, which is the tech giant’s first foray into the world of original content streaming.

The shows and films are a little sparse for a fledgling service that only offers original content, but you can expect the Apple TV Plus library to fill up over the next year, and with support for 4K and HDR streaming, those new shows will look great on your Samsung TV.

5. Amazon Prime Video

Amazon may not be the first streaming service, but it’s no slouch when it comes to delivering the best of television, which is why it deserves to be included among the best smart TV apps of 2020.

Good Omens, The Man in the High Castle, and Vikings are just a few of the exclusive shows that have aired in recent years.

Aside from exclusives, Amazon has a large movie library, with recent additions including the darkly comic biopic I, Tonya and the second installment in the John Wick franchise.

Fortunately, unlike Netflix, which requires an account to view available titles, Amazon makes its Prime listings available directly on its website, allowing you to double-check that your favorites are available before committing to a subscription.

6. Hulu

Hulu’s subscription tiers were finally updated in 2017, bringing the service in line with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

It previously had two tiers: a free service with ads and a limited pool of content, and a paid service with a larger pool of content (on which ads are still present).

You can now choose between a cheaper tier with commercials, a more robust premium tier with commercials removed, or the Hulu with Live TV bundle, which includes limited commercials for on-demand content as well as live TV channels.

Hulu’s exclusive content, which includes shows like The Mindy Project, Bob’s Burgers, and The Handmaid’s Tale, is what really draws us in.

Just keep in mind that regardless of which tier you choose, a small number of shows and series will still show ads, even if you’re on the service’s premium tier.

7. BBC iPlayer (UK-only)

The BBC is known for producing some of the best TV shows in recent years, including Killing Eve, Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Luther, all of which are available on Samsung TVs via the dedicated iPlayer app.

The BBC used to only make shows available for 30 days after they were first broadcast, but that has changed in recent years, and it now offers full seasons of most shows as well as complete runs of its most popular series.

Even better, iPlayer has the most shows of any of the streaming services on this list, because it covers everything broadcast on the BBC (with a few exceptions).

That means you can watch tentpole dramas like Sherlock alongside today’s episode of long-running soap Eastenders or Sunday night favorite Antiques Roadshow.

In the UK, you do, in fact, need a TV license to use the service.

8. All4 (UK-only)

Channel 4’s version of iPlayer, All 4, includes programming from Channel 4, E4, and More 4. However, unlike the BBC’s iPlayer, more popular shows are available on the service indefinitely.

This means that if you want to sit down and watch every episode of the fantastic Peep Show since it first aired in 2003, there’s nothing stopping you.

The IT Crowd, Black Books (both written by Graham Lineham), and guilty pleasure Grand Designs are among the other top picks.

9. PLEX

Our next recommendation is a little different from the others on this list of smart TV apps.

PLEX allows you to curate your own collection on a media server and stream it to whatever device you want, rather than streaming videos from a service.

PLEX is available on nearly every device, but it looks especially good on Smart TVs.

So, if you already have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, or any of the other streaming services on this list, why install PLEX? Because PLEX is a no-cost service.

The app’s base version, which allows you to create and maintain your own local video server, has no monthly fees.

If a DIY video streaming service sounds like a lot of work and a less-than-ideal experience, you’ll be surprised to learn that PLEX has significantly improved in recent years, making it extremely simple to set up and incredibly versatile as a streaming service.

10. HBO

HBO Go and HBO Now are two streaming services from HBO, the network behind classics like The Sopranos, The Wire, and, more recently, Game of Thrones.

The Home Box Office has produced more classics than any other network.

Many of HBO’s top shows, such as The Wire and the sublimely crafted True Blood, are available on Amazon Prime Video, but HBO’s own apps get access to shows right after they air, rather than when the boxset becomes available to the general public.

Simply put, if you want to watch Game of Thrones the day it premieres, you’ll have to pay for HBO Go or HBO Now.

So, what is the distinction between the two services?

HBO Go is a streaming service that is only available to HBO cable subscribers, whereas HBO Now is available to everyone, regardless of whether or not they pay for the premium channel.

Which one you choose is likely to be influenced by whether or not you already have a cable subscription to the service, but the HBO Now app is generally considered to be a more responsive piece of software.

11. YouTube

YouTube used to be where you could watch amateur footage of everything from skateboarding fails to cat videos, but in recent years, the site has expanded to include scripted comedies, reality TV shows, and documentaries.

Its a platform that isn’t defined by its low-budget production values any longer.

Professional video production teams are now used by content creators to produce a dizzying amount of content that caters to every possible niche.

Full movies can also be rented for 30 days or purchased outright on YouTube.

12. Spotify

The first major music streaming service, and a must-have app for anyone who wants to listen to or find music through their television.

Sign in to your Spotify account from this page to access the same songs, playlists, and library as you would on your laptop or smartphone.

This is the most comprehensive music streaming service available, with over 40 million songs and thousands more added every day.

While Spotify is still the most popular music streaming app, it is only available on smart TVs after 2015.

For those with older televisions, there is a service called Pandora.

While you may remember Pandora as an internet radio station, it is actually a much more interesting and versatile service than many people realize.

To begin with, calling it internet radio isn’t quite accurate.

It’s similar to personalized music stations generated by an algorithm.

Pandora learns from your feedback, so there’s no need to shuffle between stations.

If you don’t like a song, Pandora will skip it. If you like a song, Pandora will play more of the same.

13. VUDU

VUDU is another video streaming service, but unlike Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu, it does not offer a monthly streaming subscription with unlimited content.

Instead, titles are rented or purchased individually, and the site hosts frequent sales where you can get a good deal. Rentals range from $0.99 to $5.99, while purchases range from $4.99 to $24.99.

While VUDU’s movie library is much smaller than Netflix’s, its business model relies on titles being available to stream as soon as they are released in theaters.

This is in contrast to Netflix, which favors older films in its library.

We wouldn’t advise users to rely solely on VUDU for all of their streaming needs, but as a supplement to Netflix or Amazon Prime, VUDU excels at filling in the gaps.

14. TED

We wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to load up your new Samsung Smart TV with all of your favorite entertainment apps, such as streaming services with all of your favorite movies and TV shows.

However, breaking up the binge-watching with some TED talk wisdom might be a welcome change. The TED app allows you to watch mind-blowing and educational TED talks on your Samsung TV.

Sure, some are superior to others, but it’s a refreshing change.

It’s also cool to see some of the most popular TED talks of all time on a big screen, which you may have seen on your phone or tablet years ago.

Our Final Thoughts

A smart TV’s entire purpose is to take you beyond standard channels.

It can serve as the nerve center of your smart home if you know how to use it.

We’re here to give you some pointers on where to begin.

Samsung doesn’t rely on WebOS or Android TV to get things done; instead, it uses Tizen OS to take control of the situation.

That means you won’t have access to all of the same features as you would on other smart TVs.

With our list, we tried to cover a wide range of abilities, but new apps are released on a daily basis.
