What Is Samsung Free On My Phone? [Answered]

What is Samsung free on my phone? Have you heard about the Samsung Free service on your Galaxy device? Here’s what it is and how to turn it off.

Users began receiving notifications from a service called Samsung Free after their Samsung devices were updated to One UI 3.0. Before this latest update from Samsung, there was no warning or opt-out screen informing users of what Samsung Free was or how it would affect their daily user experience.

Much like how iPhone users reacted in 2014 when U2’s album was forced downloaded onto all iPhones, many Samsung users were dissatisfied with Samsung Free. But what exactly is this service, and is it possible – or even worthwhile – to uninstall Samsung Free from your android device or android phone?

This is also not the first time Samsung has attempted to roll out a service of this nature. This new Samsung Free service takes the place of Samsung Daily, which replaced Bixby Home in 2019. What is Samsung Free?

Samsung Free comes pre-installed on all new Samsung phones that ship with Android 11 and One UI 3.0. If you haven’t installed the most recent updates for your Samsung device, you won’t see Samsung Free.

However, because most Samsung devices force an update after three attempts of ignoring it, your phone has most likely already been updated to One UI 3.0.

Swipe to the left-most screen to access Samsung Free. When you swipe over to Samsung Free, it will automatically launch. When it loads, there will be four tabs at the bottom to choose from: Watch, Listen, Read, and Play. All you have to do to exit Samsung Free is swipe right.

1. WATCH

On the Watch tab, you’ll find free content from Samsung TV Plus, the company’s live TV on your Samsung smart tv service that comes standard with its smart TVs and is also available as a free app on mobile devices via Google Play.

Popular cable channels include Hallmark Movies & More and America’s Test Kitchen. There are also more obscure, proprietary channels that have great content but aren’t as well known.

2. LISTEN

The Listen tab is entirely dedicated to podcasts. There is no music here, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for that, but there are plenty of great podcasts. Popular hits from NPR and iHeartRadio can be found here, but the overall selection of podcasts is limited.

If you have a favorite podcast that you usually listen to on Spotify or another podcasting app, it’s unlikely that you’ll find it here.

3. READ

You can view news articles from various websites on the Read tab. If you know what you’re looking for, you can filter the stories you see by category and search for it, but for the most part, you’ll probably just scroll until you see something worth clicking on.

You can also view live news from CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC, and Bloomberg on this tab to keep up with breaking news as it happens.

4. PLAY

Finally, there’s the Play tab, which is dedicated to games. What’s even better about these games is that none of them require installation. This is due to the fact that they make use of Samsung’s Android Game Launcher, which is typically pre-installed on your device. You can use the search function to find a game that interests you, or you can browse through the tabs.

IS IT WORTH USING SAMSUNG FREE?

If you already get your content somewhere else, Samsung Free is probably not worth your time. For example, if you already have a lot of great content to watch on Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, or if you get your music and podcasts from Spotify, Samsung Free probably won’t be of much use to you.

But it’s worth at least trying out the service and seeing what’s available (especially since it’s free!) before turning it off on your Samsung device. But if you’re determined to get rid of it, here’s how.

HOW CAN I GET RID OF SAMSUNG FOR FREE?

Because Samsung Free is a stock app, there is no way to remove it permanently from your device. Isn’t it annoying? But, thankfully, there is a way to disable it so you don’t see notifications for it and don’t accidentally swipe over to it every now and then.

Disabling Samsung Free is a breeze.

  1. To access your device’s home screen editing settings, long press on an empty portion of your home screen or pinch your screen with two fingers.
  2. Swipe to the left-most screen, where Samsung Free is located, and look for a toggle button at the top to disable it. To turn it off, toggle it to the Off position.
  3. When you disable it, you will no longer see Samsung Free appear when you swipe to the left-most screen.

If you ever decide you want to see what Samsung Free has to offer, simply follow the same steps and toggle that button to the On position.

HOW TO PARTIALLY DISABLE SAMSUNG FREE?

If you like some aspects of Samsung Free, you can keep it running but customize it to your liking. This is all applicable on Samsung Galaxy s22 ultra and Samsung Galaxy s21.

  1. To access the App settings menu, open your Samsung settings and tap Apps.
  2. Scroll down the list and tap on the Samsung Free app.
  3. Tap Samsung Free settings on the app’s information page.
  4. The Samsung Free settings page is where you can customize the app’s behavior. Tap Manage channels to change what appears on the Samsung Free page.
  5. This is the page where you can customize the content that appears in the Samsung Free app. Every channel is a content category, with different content channels enabled in each one. If you don’t want to see any of those channels, you can disable them by tapping the channel category at your Samsung smartphone.
  6. Scroll down the channel listing page and toggle the toggle to Off on any channels you don’t want to see content for. To turn off the entire channel category, simply toggle All channels to Off.
  7. Back on the Samsung Free settings page, you can further customize the app. Scroll down to the Privacy section of the page. You can disable whether Samsung Free can access your phone’s viewing or listening activities in order to customize the content and ads that appear in the app.

DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR SAMSUNG DEVICE

If you think it’s disgusting that Samsung would impose a service (even if it’s free) on its users without warning, disable Samsung phone Free. Although it would have been preferable if Samsung had presented it as an optional download or, at the very least, informed its users about it, the company is attempting to compete with Google’s Discover service.

Unfortunately, Samsung’s best way to compete was to simply put the service on everyone’s devices. However, as we saw with the U2 album on iPhones, people don’t like unexpected content or services appearing on their smartphones.

Personalize your phone. Change your theme or wallpaper, install a new keyboard, personalize your icons, or deactivate Samsung Free. All that matters in a you-do-you world is what you want to see on your galaxy phone on a daily basis.
